Stanford women’s basketball defeated Arizona 54-53 on Sunday to break a 29-year national championship drought.
It was the first championship for Tara VanDerveer’s team since 1992.
With 17 points, Haley Jones led the Cardinal. In the game, she also had eight rebounds and a block. At the end of the game, she had a clutch and-one. Because of her national title success, she was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Cam Brink and Lacie Hull both scored ten points. Brink had six rebounds and three blocks to his name. Hull grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out two assists.
McDonald scored 22 points on 5-of-21 shooting to lead all scorers. He also had two assists and three rebounds.
Shaina Pennington came off the bench to score 15 points.
This is Stanford’s third national championship. VanDerveer was in charge of both of them. Molly Goodenbour, Rachel Hemmer, and Val Whiting were part of the 1992 championship squad.
