Barcelona is apparently investigating Nicolas Tagliafico of AFC Ajax as a possible replacement for Valencia captain Jose Gaya, who is Barcelona’s main left-back target.
Barcelona is putting up AFC Ajax’s Argentine international Nicolas Tagliafico as a backup if their pursuit of Valencia captain Jose Gaya fails, according to a report from Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo.
Tagliafico has been with Ajax since January 2018, after joining from Independiente in Argentina. Since then, the 28-year-old has developed into a crucial player for the Dutch giants, making 139 games in which he has scored 13 goals and assisted on 19 others while also earning two Eredivisie titles.
In the 2020/21 season, he appeared in 40 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and assisting on four others.
Tagliafico’s strong performances with Ajax haven’t gone unnoticed, with the Argentine international being linked with a move to Manchester United recently. Barcelona has also emerged as a possible bidder for the 28-year-old ahead of the 2021/22 season.
Los Che is also expected to seek a transfer price of roughly €40 million for Gaya, which Barcelona would be unable to meet. As a result, it’s been suggested that they’ll try to negotiate a reduced cost or make an offer in exchange for a player. However, if the deal falls through, the Blaugrana will redirect their attention to Tagliafico.
